PB RoRo was launched in early 2008. We were attracted to the RoRo sector by its compelling demand and supply outlook: a relatively old age profile and modest orderbook, combined with the growing economic and environmental case for transferring more coastal trucking activity onto the sea, makes for bright longer-term prospects for this type of ship. It is a sector that requires the same commitment to professional marine management, excellence and customer service that Pacific Basin delivers in its cornerstone dry bulk shipping business.
In September 2009, we took delivery from Odense Steel Shipyard our first RoRo vessel which now operates in the North Sea between Holland and the UK.
We have a further five RoRo newbuildings on order, delivering in 2010 and 2011. Three will be built by Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark and, like our first ship, will be of the proven, versatile, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly Flensburger design. We have agreed to timecharter a further two RoRos being built at Hyundai Mipo Shipyard in Korea, for which we hold purchase options exercisable on delivery.
These ships are all well suited to serve the major RoRo trades in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and elsewhere. Our intention is to act as a tonnage supplier, time chartering them to existing RoRo operators to allow them to develop new trades, expand cargo volumes and achieve flexibility in operations.
Ship management of the PB RoRo fleet will be provided by Meridian Marine Management Limited , in which Pacific Basin has a 50% shareholding. Based in Liverpool, Meridian specialises in the management of RoRo, RoPax and other specialised tonnage.
